Toyota Prius Maintenance Tasks
One misconception in owning a Toyota Prius means you never have to take it for service. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The Gasoline/Hybrid engines use very thin oil which must stand up to a myriad of harsh conditions. Over time this results in loss of engine oil through regular consumption. In some cases, it could be more than several quarts lost between the normal 5,000-mile oil change intervals. Unfortunately, this can lead to catastrophic engine failure due to low/no oil in the engine. We highly recommend checking your oil at least every 1,000 miles. Also, another overlooked item is the transmission fluid. We recommend changing the transmission fluid at least every 50,000 miles. Most of the transmission failures we see could have easily been prevented with a simple fluid change.
