Toyota Prius Repair & Maintenance

Toyota states that 95% of their Prius’ sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today, that’s an amazing statistic and says a lot about the Prius! Toyota is now on the fourth generation of this cool hybrid vehicle and it is available in several different models making it a very versatile choice for a variety of consumers.

Toyota Prius’ are fantastic cars that can provide their owners with many happy miles of use if regular scheduled maintenance is observed. We have quite a few Prius customers with over 300K miles on their vehicles and they are still going strong. That said, there are a few items you need to keep an eye on to make sure your Toyota Prius is happily cruising along our highways and byways here in Utah.

Toyota Prius Maintenance Tasks

One misconception in owning a Toyota Prius means you never have to take it for service. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The Gasoline/Hybrid engines use very thin oil which must stand up to a myriad of harsh conditions. Over time this results in loss of engine oil through regular consumption. In some cases, it could be more than several quarts lost between the normal 5,000-mile oil change intervals. Unfortunately, this can lead to catastrophic engine failure due to low/no oil in the engine. We highly recommend checking your oil at least every 1,000 miles. Also, another overlooked item is the transmission fluid. We recommend changing the transmission fluid at least every 50,000 miles. Most of the transmission failures we see could have easily been prevented with a simple fluid change.

Look Down… at the Tires

Another thing to watch is the tires. Toyota designed the braking system to recharge the engine battery while the brakes are in use. This design causes the tires to wear quicker than a standard gasoline engine vehicle. We advise all our Prius driving customers to have regular tire rotations to avoid premature wear. Due to the engine design and the regenerative braking system, regular servicing is a must on these vehicles.
